I retired from the US Navy in Sept 1993 after 32 years of active and reserve service. While serving on ships and working on surface to air missile and gun systems, I was on the Cuban Missile Blockade and served in Vietnam. My last active duty was in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. I was part of the Military Sealift Command in Saudi Arabia. After retirement, I got involved with the U.S. Volunteers soon after 9-11-2001. I was trained and certified through Riverside National Cemetery to be an Honor Guard prior to establishing a Memorial Honors Detail in Ventura County California, in January, 2004.

1MHD Description

The 1st Military Honors Detail (1MHD), a part of the 1st United States Volunteers (1USV) a private non-profit military society, provides Military Honors at veterans' funerals and other public events. The 1 MHD conducts a meeting and practice drill at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park (cemetery) 5400 Valentine Rd. in Ventura, CA, every month, on Sunday afternoon, from 1 to 4 pm. There is one more practice meeting in 2008 on November 9th. The dates for 2009 are: Jan 26, Feb 8, Mar 15, Apr 19, Jun 13, Jul 12, Sep 20, Oct 11, and Nov 1. We usually practice a full service for cremated remains by having the Honor Guards carry in a tri folded flag and a simulated urn. Our rifle team (dry) fires three rifle volleys, the flag team unfolds the flag and holds it horizontal while our bugler plays "Taps." The flag is refolded and given to the Officer in Charge who in turn presents it to the (simulated) next of kin. These words are spoken: "This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation, as a token of our appreciation, for the honorable and faithful service rendered by your loved one." We also practice a service for casketed remains and being a color guard. If you are in need of our free services or would like more information about joining or donating to this IRS 501 (c) 3 non profit, tax exempt organization, contact me by email at militaryhonors@pacbell.net or by telephone at 805-667-7909. CWO4 Carl Wade, USN Ret. Officer in Charge, 1st Memorial Honors Detail, Ventura, CA.
